Regulators consider potential impact of proposed mergers

Georgia is one of 20 states affected by the proposed $34 billion Aetna-Humana merger that was announced last year.

Shareholders and at least 15 of the 20 states in which the insurance giants operate have already approved the deal. It must also be authorized by federal antitrust regulators.

If approved by the U.S. Department of Justice, Aetna would become the second largest health insurance company in the nation. That, combined with Anthem’s $54 billion deal to buy Cigna, would drop the number of large national insurance providers from five to three. Opponents argue the mergers will result in less competition and higher prices.
