Emergency management agency says state parks will not turn away anyone seeking assistance
As the East Coast braces for Hurricane Florence, Georgia is deploying available resources to ensure public safety and assist evacuees.
The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) says state parks, including campsites and cottages, are open to out-of-state evacuees. “Georgia State Parks will not be turning away any visitors seeking assistance,” GEMA/HS says.
The agency says all cabins will be allowed to accommodate domestic pets. Pet fees will be waived during this weather event. Also, parks that currently have overnight equestrian facilities will allow visitors traveling with horses to use portable corrals and high lines (with tree saver straps). “AH Stephens State Park will utilize the event field as an overflow for their equestrian campground,” the agency says.
Also, the Atlanta Motor Speedway camping facilities are open for hurricane evacuees.
Livestock too is being considered as Georgia seeks to assist neighboring states. The Georgia Department of Agriculture has temporarily suspended interstate movement requirements for animals evacuating from Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
There are currently no evacuation orders for Georgia.
GEMA/HS says it’s monitoring fuel supplies across the state and, as of Wednesday afternoon, no fuel shortages were reported.
