Georgia Senate honors McKenzie Coan

Three-time Paralympic gold medalist McKenzie Coan was honored this week by state lawmakers. Sen. John Wilkinson (R-Toccoa) hosted the Clarkesville native in the Senate Chamber and presented her with a resolution recognizing her many achievements.

Coan won four medals in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro; three gold medals in the 50, 100 and 400 meter freestyle events and a silver medal in the 400 meter freestyle relay. It was her second Paralympic Games. She also competed in 2012 in London and has competed in numerous national and international competitions.

Coan was diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta as a child and began swimming for therapy at age six for therapy. Some of her early years in the swimming pool were spent as a member of the Habersham Rapids swim club under Coach Anthony Rabern.

Beyond her athletic achievements, the resolution recognized Coan as a “dynamic, inspirational” young woman whose “extraordinary discipline, positive attitude, and indomitable spirit…renew and strengthen the public admiration and respect that she and her fellow Paralympians so rightfully deserve.”

“I was honored to have the distinct privilege of recognizing McKenzie and her accomplishments in the Senate,” says Wilkinson. “McKenzie is such a brilliant and strong young woman who has proven that through hard work and dedication anything is possible. I am truly humbled to know her and her family.”

Coan currently is a student at Loyola University in Baltimore where she’s on the Dean’s List. She plans to attend law school after she graduates.
