Georgia Power has been working around Demorest over the last several weeks replacing utility poles, most recently along Hazel Avenue.
Now Habersham reached out to Georgia Power for further information about the project. Georgia Power PR and Communications Specialist Alicia Brown responded via email with additional information.
Georgia Power has ongoing upgrades to the electrical infrastructure in the Demorest area as part of a major investment aimed at improving grid reliability and service for customers, according Brown.
Much of the area’s existing electric system infrastructure is 60 to 70 years old, and company officials say replacement is necessary to maintain consistent and dependable service to both homes and businesses.
The project, which began in fall 2024, is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2025. Georgia Power says its crews are working diligently to minimize disruptions to the community during the upgrades.

While complete road closures are not anticipated, temporary lane closures may be necessary in some areas. The company says it will coordinate with local officials to reduce traffic impacts and ensure public safety.
To safely complete the upgrades, isolated outages may be required. Georgia Power will notify affected customers in advance, when possible, using flyers on door handles and other communication methods.
In addition, tree trimming will be increased in areas with heavy vegetation to reduce the risk of outages from falling limbs — especially during storm events.
Georgia Power says it remains committed to keeping the community informed throughout this project and any future upgrades. “We’re investing in our electrical grid to strengthen it and make it more reliable to better serve our customers,” the company stated.
