Georgia Power offers tips to avoid common scams

Georgia Power warns customers to watch out for scammers posing as employees. The state’s largest utility says there’s been a recent rash of reports about people being targeted.

The company says Georgia Power employees will never ask you to provide a credit card or pre-paid debit card number over the phone. The company also does not send employees into the field to collect payments in person. If your account is past due, Georgia Power will contact you by a pre-recorded phone message or letter asking you to call Georgia Power to discuss the account.

The company urges customers to remain vigilant and follow these tips to avoid being scammed.

  • If paying in person, only pay your bill at an Authorized Payment Location (APL).
  • If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be from Georgia Power and demanding payment to avoid disconnection, hang up and contact the company’s customer service line at 888-660-5890.
  • Delete all emails that demand immediate payment or personal information.

Georgia Power says if one of its employees does need to visit your home or business, they will be in uniform and present a badge with a photo, their name, and company logo on it. They will also be in a vehicle marked with the company’s logo.

Law enforcement agencies throughout the state are working with Georgia Power to identify and prosecute criminals who pose as employees to defraud customers.
