The Georgia Mountain Farm Tour to is heading into final preparation for the tour June 27th and 28th. The fourth annual event promises to be better than ever. A perfect outing for all ages, the tour takes attendees on a self-guided view of farms in several counties that supply food to local farmers’ markets. Each farm has produce and other farm goodies available as well as a wealth of knowledge to share. Whether you have a home garden or just enjoy seeing how your food is grown, the tour is a fun family adventure.
This year, two well-known Farm-to-Table restaurants are joining the tour and will offer specials utiltizing the best of the farmers’ offerings. In Rabun County, Fortify Kitchen and Bar was just named one of the top 100 restaurants in America by Open Table. Chef Jamie Allred has been a leading proponent of locally grown and started the “Featured Farmer” dinners at Lake Rabun Hotel and now his own restaurant, Fortify. In Habersham, Chef Chris Bolton has been utilizing local produce for more than a decade. At Glen-Ella Springs, he developed partnerships with local growers that he picked up and expanded when he returned to his roots in Habersham and opened his own restaurant, Harvest Habersham. Both restaurants will be highlighting the best of locally grown during the tour.
The tour was developed out of a passion of the members of the Georgia Mountain Farmers’ Network to learn from each other and to share their kowledge with others. Armed with a grant to begin the Naturally Grown online farmers’ market, the members looked at models of other farm tours and modified it to suit the needs of our area. Attendance doubled last year and promises to be the largest yet. The proceeds from the tour defray the costs of the tour and then the members vote on what needs are to be met. Workshops and help for the Foodbank have been high on the list of priorities.
Tickets are available at the following locations are are sold on a per car basis, so load your vehicle up with friends and family and enjoy a day of fun, food and knowledge! Tickets have the tour and directions to each location. The $35 price included both days. Special price of $30 is available until Thursday.
