Georgia DOT crews treating roadways ahead of winter storm

The Georgia Department of Transportation began spreading brine on state roads and bridges this morning in preparation for the arrival of a predicted winter storm.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday through Friday evening for much of northern Georgia. Habersham County is under a Winter Weather Advisory. Accumulating snow and ice are expected across the region.

Georgia DOT says its crews will monitor conditions and continue treating roads and bridges throughout the night in Rabun, White, Towns, Lumpkin, Union, Habersham, and Dawson counties. They’ll also treat roads through the day Friday as needed.

Officials caution drivers in Northeast Georgia to watch out for DOT trucks. Please remain mindful that brine trucks must travel at 40 mph to properly apply the treatment. Stay back a safe distance if you encounter them on the road.
