Work is underway to remove and replace the sections of I-85 in Atlanta that were damaged by a blistering blaze Thursday. In a press release issued Saturday, GDOT says bridge demolition and replacement is underway and traffic management plans for the coming week have been finalized.
“Demolition work has begun and will continue through early next week,” the release states. “Once demolition is completed, an accurate scope of needed work and a more exact timeline for expected completion can be estimated.”
I-85 is now closed between Buford Highway and GA 400.
Motorists should be prepared for new traffic patterns as they drive the corridor, and are encouraged to continue to seek alternate routes, ride MARTA or GRTA, contact Georgia Commute Options and to utilize a favorite wayfinding app.
GDOT says, “The Department of Public Safety has been working with the trucking industry and all trucking-related associations since the start of this event advising them of restrictions and needed route adjustments.”
