Chattahoochee River, Ga. – Georgia DOT announces Wednesday, April 1 crews will begin to set the new pre-stressed concrete bridge beams for the new State Route 20 Bridge over the Chattahoochee River. The plan is to set six beams overnight Wednesday and six beams overnight Thursday, if weather cooperates.
“Each bridge beam is custom made like a puzzle piece that only fits in one place. The beams will be driven up Interstate 985 then across SR 20 to the work zone. Each beam is 140 feet long and six feet tall. Beams will be set in place overnight. The work will close one lane of SR 20 overnights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday. A flagger will direct traffic across the bridge one lane at a time, creating delays along the corridor. These are the first beams to be set as part of the new bridge,” explained Harold Mull, Georgia DOT District Construction Engineer.
The 1.07 mile long project widens SR 20 from James Burgess Road in Forsyth to Burnett Trail in Gwinnett to a four lane divided highway with sidewalks and includes new bridges over the Chattahoochee River at a contract cost of $10.2 million. C.W. Matthews Contracting of Marietta is the Contractor.
The SR 20 corridor from Samples Road in Cumming across the Chattahoochee River to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard is under construction, to be widened to a four lane divided highway in 3 separate projects totaling 7.53 miles. The existing bridge over the Chattahoochee River was built in 1947 and does not meet current design standards.
The speed limit in SR 20 work zone is 35 miles per hour around the clock. All fines are doubles in a work zone, up to $2,000 – slow down for your safety and your budget!
