GBI: Suspect sought after officer-involved shooting in Toccoa

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is asking the public to be on the lookout for a man after an officer-involved shooting Monday in Toccoa.

According to the GBI, Montavious Cantrell Winkfield, 37, is wanted on two counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement officers.

The preliminary information indicates on July 1 at about 2:10 p.m., Toccoa police officers stopped a vehicle near Diagonal Street in Toccoa.

“Winkfield got out of the vehicle and began shooting at the officers,” says GBI Public Affairs Director Nelly Miles. “An officer fired a gun at him, and he ran away.”

Miles says no officers were injured in the incident. Winkfield is still on the run.

The Toccoa Police Department has taken warrants for Winkfield. Miles says law enforcement is working to find him and take him into custody.

Around 4 o’clock Monday, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office reported a heavy police presence in the area of Broad and Bell Streets. Sheriff’s deputies and other local law enforcement agencies are currently in the area assisting Toccoa police and the GBI with the manhunt and investigation.

Anyone with information about this incident or Winkfield’s location should call the Toccoa PD tip line at 706-282-3236. Tips may also be submitted by calling the GBI Tip Line at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477) or visiting the GBI’s online Tip Line or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.

This investigation is active and ongoing, says Miles. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.
