The GBI is investigating the death of a White County inmate.

According to a news release from the White County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested Joe Sertain, 38, of Gainesville, and Joey Loggins, 37, of Cleveland, on Monday, May 24. The pair were taken into custody on outstanding warrants following a traffic stop at U.S. 129 South and Old Highway 75 South. Deputies also charged them with possession of methamphetamine, according to the release.

Online jail records show Sertain was booked into the White County Detention Center at 1:25 p.m. on May 24. Just over four hours later, at 5:42 p.m., WCSO Capt. Clay Hammond says Sertain suffered a medical emergency. He was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he later died.

The White County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to investigate the matter. The sheriff’s office did not release any further details.

Now Habersham will continue to update this story as new information becomes available.
