An inmate at the Habersham County Detention Center died early Thursday.
The older male inmate, whose name is not being released yet, was found dead in his cell at about 3:15 a.m. on July 13.
The inmate had numerous health issues, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
As is standard in cases of in-custody deaths, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office has requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in the case.
The incident comes less than a week after an inmate reportedly attacked and injured a county jailer. That inmate, Mark Roberts, is accused of knocking the jailer unconscious. He remains in jail on a $48,800 bond, according to online records.
The jailer, who the sheriff’s office has not publicly identified, was treated and released from an area hospital. A sheriff’s office spokesperson says he returned to work this week.
