UPDATE: GBI investigates shooting in Rabun County

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has provided an updated account of the shooting that occurred in Rabun County.

According to GBI Assistant Special Agent Dustin Hamby, the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to assist with a shooting investigation on Tuesday, October 22.

Rabun County Deputies responded at 12:30 a.m to an apparent domestic situation at a residence on Bent Laurel Ridge Drive in Clayton.

Prior to deputies arriving at the residence, police say the male victim was shot by Colin McCarthy, 37, of Clayton. The victim was airlifted to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

McCarthy was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was transported and booked in to the Rabun County Detention Center.

This investigation is currently active and ongoing. Once the investigation is complete it will be provided to the Rabun County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

According to a press release from Rabun County Sheriff Mark Gerrells posted on social media Tuesday morning, one person was injured in the shooting and was airlifted to a regional hospital for treatment. The assailant was taken into custody without incident.

“This is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community,” Gerrells said in the press release. He added, “Rabun County Investigators are working in conjunction with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to ensure a thorough investigation.”
