GBI Investigates inmate death in Lumpkin County

The GBI has launched an investigation into the death of an inmate found hanging in his cell at the Lumpkin County jail.

38-year-old Randall Thomas Hanley of Dahlonega was found around 10:38 a.m. Thursday, June 25.

“Lumpkin County officers performed lifesaving measures and, ultimately, EMS transported Hanley to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7 p.m.,” according to GBI spokesperson Natalie Ammons.

The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office called in the GBI to investigate.

Hanley was in custody for several charges related to a domestic violence incident. He was denied bond on these charges on June 18. His case was pending trial.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation that is currently ongoing. The preliminary investigation indicates that Hanley died from self-inflicted hanging. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur.
