An investigation into the discovery of human remains found in Elbert County in January is now being handled by the GBI, according to Elbert County Coroner Chuck Almond.
The remains were found by local authorities in a wooded area off Kathwood Drive on Jan. 26 before an investigation was launched over a two-day period – on Jan. 26 and 27. Evidence was gathered at the scene and, in accordance with standard procedure, the human remains, along with additional evidence, were sent to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and identification.
Due to the condition of the remains, authorities say the identification process is expected to be lengthy and will involve specialized testing carried out by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.
As of now, according to police, there has been no confirmation of the identity of the remains, nor the cause or manner of death, as investigators continue to work on the case.
