GBI investigates deadly officer-involved shooting in Lumpkin County

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Lumpkin County that left one man dead.

55-year-old Paul Cheek was killed outside his home at 1851 Black Mountain Road on Wednesday, November 20. He died from a single gunshot fired by a Lumpkin County Sheriff’s deputy during a confrontation, says GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles.

The deputy was dispatched to the scene after 66-year-old Wylene Cheek called Lumpkin County 911 to report a domestic disturbance involving her husband.

“A responding Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Deputy made contact with Paul Cheek in the front yard of the residence, at which time Cheek pulled out a knife. During the confrontation, Cheek was shot by the deputy one time,” says Miles.

Cheek was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured in the incident. The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to investigate the shooting, which is standard procedure when an officer is involved.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation. Once it’s complete the case will be turned over to the Enotah Judicial Circuit District Attorney for review.

This is the 79th officer-involved shooting that the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2019.
