First responders were caught by surprise this morning while helping victims of a car wreck near Turnerville. While working the scene, officials found an object that looked like a pipe bomb in the wreckage.

The object was found on the ground. It was “wrapped in electrical tape with magnetic attachments,” says Habersham County Sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Wurtz.

The object was made of 3.5″ PVC pipe with a screw-in style cap, according to Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Casey Coffee.

The GBI Bomb Squad was called in to investigate. They x-rayed the object and determined it was not an explosive device, but rather, a hand-made storage container.

Law enforcement closed GA 15/US 441 in both directions in the area of Tom Born Road for two hours while authorities investigated.

The driver accused of causing the wreck that sparked the bomb scare was charged with DUI.
