Roads reopen, evacuees return following gas leak in Cornelia

Dozens of people evacuated this morning due to a gas leak are returning to their homes and businesses in Cornelia. Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith says Atlanta Gas Light has the leak under control. Roads in the area are reopened.

Police shut down a section of North Main Street, Stonecypher Street and surrounding side roads for several hours Thursday morning. Roads reopened around 11:30 a.m.

Chief Smith says the leak was caused by a car wreck that ruptured gas lines. No one was injured in the single vehicle accident.

Police and fire personnel evacuated around 50 people from the area as a precaution.
