Garland Lewallen, Sr., age 83 of Baldwin, passed away Friday, March 11, 2016.
Born in Gainesville, Georgia on March 28, 1932, he was a son of the late William “Will” Jasper and Blanche Saxon Lewallen. Mr. Lewallen was a 1950 graduate of Lula High School. He then went on to serve as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1968, Mr. Lewallen founded Northeast Georgia Carpet Incorporated which he owned and operated until his death. He was a member of Belton Baptist Church in Lula but actively attended Mt. View Baptist Church in Baldwin for many years, where he sang in the choir. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed farming, gardening, hunting and fishing with his grandchildren, tinkering with tractors and working with his hands.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by sisters-in-law, Carolyn Lewallen and Ulmar Evans; brothers-in-law, Denver Evans, Roy Thomas and Jewell Thomas; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Luke and Myrtle Evans.
Survivors include wife of 61 years, Reba Nell Evans Lewallen of Baldwin; sons and daughters-in-law, Garland William “Bill”, Jr. and Marsha Lewallen of Clarkesville and Bradley and Alicia Lewallen of Clarkesville; grandchildren, Garland William “Will” Lewallen, III, Matthew Howard “Matt” Lewallen, Abigail Grace “Abby” Lewallen, Lawson Evan Lewallen and Lindsey Elizabeth Lewallen; sister, Winnie Thomas of Lula; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Virginia Lewallen of Gainesville, Marvin and Joyce Lewallen of Gainesville, Bobby Lewallen of Talmo, David and Shelby Lewallen of Gainesville and Danny and Peggy Lewallen of Gainesville; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Elora Stargel of Gainesville, Ruth and Tim McCoy of Gillsville and Betty Thomas of Lula; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Melvin and Emi Evans of Baldwin; numerous nieces, nephews, other friends and relatives.
Funeral services are 11 am Tuesday, March 15, 2016, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin and Stewart with Rev. Drewery Loggins and Rev. Chad Parker officiating. Interment will follow in the L.L. Evans Family Cemetery in Lula.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 7-9 pm on Monday at the funeral home.
