A Habersham County Grand Jury has indicted 28-year-old Corey Cantrell of Gainesville on charges related to the fentanyl overdose death of 27-year-old Sidney Cantrell.
The charges include aggravated involuntary manslaughter for the sale of fentanyl and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s (GBI) Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO) launched an investigation on January 19 at the request of the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities determined that Sidney Cantrell died after using fentanyl allegedly supplied by Corey Cantrell. Despite sharing a last name, the two are not related.
Authorities say Corey Cantrell was arrested on February 12 at his Gainesville residence by ARDEO agents, assisted by the Gainesville Police Department K9 Unit and the Hall County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Unit.
The indictment was handed down on April 10 and the case is being prosecuted by the Habersham County District Attorney’s Office.
