GA regional commissions see hike in January unemployment rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that all 12 regional commissions in the state recorded increases in unemployment rates. Despite this, all Regional Commissions saw the January labor force numbers rise.

“Even though we continue to see Georgia’s workforce be successfully employed in record-breaking numbers, there is still much more work to do as we continue to see hundreds of thousands of jobs needed to be filled,” said Commissioner Mark Butler.

Employment was up in the Atlanta, Central Savannah River, Heart of Georgia, Northeast Georgia, Southern Georgia, Southwest Georgia, and Three Rivers Regional Commissions.

  • The January preliminary unemployment rate was up five-tenths to 3.4 percent over the month (o-t-m), the rate was 5.4 percent one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 16,294 o-t-m and up 71,342 over the year (o-t-y), to 2,508,555.
  • The number of employed was up 4,324 o-t-m and up 118,069 o-t-y, to 2,423,973.
  • The labor force and number of employed were all-time highs.
  • Initial claims were up 3,616 (51%) o-t-m and down 43,196 (80%) o-t-y, to 10,736.
  • Initial claims were up o-t-m in Administrative and Support Services and Information, and down o-t-y in Administrative and Support Services and Accommodation and Food Services.
  • There were 88,772 jobs posted on Employ Georgia.

  • The January preliminary unemployment rate was up six-tenths to 3.9 percent o-t-m, the rate was 5.3 percent one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 1,636 o-t-m and down 1,381 o-t-y, to 209,753.
  • The number of employed was up 321 o-t-m and up 1,501 o-t-y, to 201,536.
  • Initial claims were up 281 (30%) o-t-m and down 4,533 (-79%) o-t-y, to 1,209.
  • Initial claims were up o-t-m in Administrative and Support Services and Accommodation and Food Services, and down o-t-y in Manufacturing and Accommodation and Food Services.
  • There were 5,995 jobs posted on Employ Georgia.

  • The labor force was up 1,015 o-t-m and up 7,619 o-t-y, to 346,032.
