Funeral arrangements have been announced for a Banks County High School student killed last week in a single-vehicle wreck.
17-year-old Kevyn Josue Garfias-Hilagor was killed in a crash in his hometown of Commerce. He was a rising Junior at BCHS.
Employed by the El Japeno restaurant in Banks County, co-workers said Garfias-Hilagor died in a crash on his way to work. “We are devastated and still processing on how and why?!,” Gaby Flores posted to social media upon hearing the news.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, Garfias-Hilagor was driving a Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on McDonald Circle north of Commerce when he traveled onto the south shoulder of the road. The truck struck an embankment and overturned, ejecting the teen from the cab. The accident report indicates he died at the scene.
Lovingly remembered
Banks County Middle School teacher Trent Campbell openly shared his grief over the loss, calling Kevyn a beloved member of the Banks County community.
“It was a joy to have Kevyn as a student. He was fun and kind. Such a tragedy and loss,” Campbell wrote.
Family and friends echoed Campbell’s sentiments, describing Garfias-Hilagor as a “bright, fun-loving, and kind young man” whose presence brought joy to those around him.
He is survived by his parents, Oscar Garfias and Rosario Hilagor, a brother, and four sisters. A funeral mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Clarkesville.
The family will receive friends at McGahee-Griffin & McEntire Funeral Home in Cornelia from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, with a rosary to begin at 7 p.m.
An online fundraiser has been established to help the family with funeral and related expenses. Supporters may visit the page for details or contribute directly.
