Funeral services are scheduled Saturday for former Habersham County educator and coach, Bruce Lewallen. Lewallen passed away Wednesday, January 17. At the time of his death he was also serving as a member of the Clarkesville City Council.
Coach Lewallen began his education career in Habersham County, according to his obituary. He taught for several years at North Habersham before becoming an assistant principal. He later retired as principal of Woodville Elementary School.
During his distinguished career, Lewallen coached football at Banks County High School and Habersham Central. He coached football and basketball at North Habersham Middle School.
News of his passing was met with sadness and fond memories on social media.
Lewallen had served on the Clarkesville City Council since 2016. Mayor Barrie Aycock issued this statement following his death: “The Council, Staff, and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our fellow Council Member Bruce Lewallen. Bruce, also fondly known as Coach, was an active and contributing Clarkesville citizen for many years. We all appreciate his service on the Council and he will be missed. Our prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends”
Funeral services are scheduled at 4 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018, from the chapel at McGhee-Griffin and Stewart Funeral Home in Cornelia. Burial will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, January 19 at the funeral home. McGahee-Griffin and Stewart Funeral Home is located at 175 VFW Road, Cornelia, Georgia 30531.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Coach Bruce Lewallen to the Clarkesville Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 667, Clarkesville, Georgia 30523.
