Funeral Friday for Alto man killed in wreck

Funeral services are scheduled this Friday for an Alto man killed in a two-vehicle wreck. 38-year old Orlando Gonzalez-Lopez died March 10 in a head on collision on Smokey Road just north of Wild Cherry Road in Alto.

According to the Georgia State Patrol report, 20-year old Nicolas Austin of Demorest was traveling north on Smokey Road in a 2004 Chevy Silverado when he ran off the road, lost control, overcorrected and crossed the center line. Austin’s pickup then struck Gonzalez-Lopez’s 2003 Nissan Frontier head-on in the southbound land.

Gonzalez-Lopez was trapped inside his truck and had to be extricated. He died at the scene.

Austin suffered injuries to his chest and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

GSP Cpl. Dallas Van Scoten reported Austin was speeding at the time of the accident. State Patrol Troop B’s Specialized Collision Reconstructions Team (SCRT) is investigating. Charges are pending.

Gonzalez-Lopez leaves behind a wife and three children. A funeral mass is scheduled for 12 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2017, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Clarkesville.
