Friday Night Preview: Local Teams Face Huge Tests In Week 5

It’s doubtful we’ll see another week like Week 4 gave us, as four local teams were forced to play overtime, and two played double-overtime. With Habersham Central taking a tough loss at Stephens and Dawson in 2OT, there are now only three perfect teams left in our area.
Rabun County takes its unbeaten team to West Hall, while Commerce travels to Athens Christian still perfect. Union County is also without blemish, but they seem the most likely to see that streak disappear tonight when they travel to #1 Greater Atlanta Christian, which features Stanford QB commit Davis Mills.

Jefferson and Gainesville square off for the first time in history…wait, is that right?!? It is correct. Despite being separated by a mere 22 1/2 miles, the local powerhouse teams have never met on the gridiron for a regular season or playoff game. That changes tonight, and being that it’s a top-10 matchup, it’s no wonder it’s our game of the night!

Jefferson’s running game is incredible, powered by the electrifying Colby Wood. He’s still just a junior, which is hard to believe since he’s been the featured back since 2014’s first game. Wood has 442 yards rushing and 199 receiving in four games so far, good for 641 total yards and 8 touchdowns.  Senior back Zack Boobas is worth keeping an eye on too, as he has 228 rushing yards with five TD to his credit. Bryce Moore does the passing, although they won’t pass much. He has 324 passing yards and a touchdown.

Gainesville’s JR QB Demarcus Irons is as tough as they get. While Jefferson runs the ball down your throat, the Red Elephants counter with a strong passing game. Irons has tossed for nearly 600 yards in three games, collecting a few touchdowns. His top target is former Habersham Central player Jim Barnett, who has 186 yards receiving. Irons using many different receivers, including Martavious “Red” Davis, a senior with 193 yards and a score. KD Smith does most of the ground work, adding up 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Highlights of the Jefferson/Gainesville game will be provided by BLITZ, and shared with HIGH 5 SPORTS at 11 p.m. on Fox 5. Habersham’s game at Chestatee also will have highlights shown on Fox 5, as the High 5 Chopper will bring you aerial highlights.
