Fred Herndon Mewborne

Fred Herndon Mewborne, age 88, of Mount Airy, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

Mr. Mewborne was born on December 2, 1936, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, to the late Clifford Ellis Mewborne and Mary Kellum Mewborne. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Ann Mewborne; Joe and Sylvia Mewborne; and brother-in-law, Mike Schude.

Fred graduated from Oglethorpe High School, where he was quarterback of the football team. He then graduated from North Georgia Technical School, where he had played on the basketball team. Fred was a United States Veteran, having served in the United States Air Force. Fred was a loyal member of Mount Airy Baptist Church. He had retired from Coca-Cola Company where he had served for a number of years as a truck driver. He had volunteered many years at the Food Bank in Cornelia and had also been a van driver for Georgia Mountain Community Services. Outside of his profession and volunteering, Fred enjoyed all sports, especially the Georgia Bulldawgs. Most importantly, Fred will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Hilda York Mewborne, of Mt. Airy; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Chad McAllister, of Demorest; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Penny Mewborne, of Columbia, SC; sister, Susan Mewborn Schude, of Commerce; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence and Susan Mewborn, of Bogart; Tom and Barbara Mewborn, of Demorest; Rick and Tina Mewborn, of Elberton; Horace and Jennifer Mewborn, of Hartwell; grandchildren, Emily Mewborne; Audrey Caldwell and her spouse, Logan; Alexa McAllister, Jackson McAllister; and one great-granddaughter due in April, Hattie Faith Caldwell.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, with Rev. Jon Huebner and Rev. Tom Mewborn officiating. Interment will follow in the Baldwin City Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Air Force and the Grant Reeves Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2025 at the funeral home prior to the service.
