The former mayor of a city in Madison County has been indicted on charges related to financial fraud, according to authorities.

According to GBI, Paul Walton, 58, of McDonough, the former mayor of Hull, has been indicted on multiple charges including theft by taking, violation of oath of office and financial transaction card fraud.

The charges stem from an investigation initiated in January of 2024, when the Northern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Office of Special Investigations to look into Walton’s alleged misuse of a city-issued credit card for personal expenses. Walton served as mayor from 2019 until 2023.

On April 21, according to authorities, the case was presented to a grand jury in the Northern Judicial Circuit, resulting in Walton’s indictment on one count of violation of oath of office, one count of felony theft by taking and 54 counts of financial transaction card fraud.

Walton surrendered to authorities and was booked into the Madison County Jail on May 8.
