Former Helen Police Chief Gene Penland dies

(Hiawassee)- Funeral Services will be held today for Gene Boyd Penland, age 75, of Hiawassee, who was a police chief in the city of  Helen.  Pendland passed away Monday at his home.

He began his law enforcement career at the Towns County Sheriff’s Department where he was promoted to chief deputy. He then moved to Helen Police Department where he served for six years, four of those as the Chief of Police. Penland finished his law enforcement career in White County as a deputy sheriff for seven years.

After his law enforcement career, he worked with Jacky Jones Ford in Cleveland and remained there until retiring in 2009.

Penland is the grandfather of Now Habersham weather forecaster Tyler Penland.

Services are scheduled today, Friday, February 7,  at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Banister-Cooper Funeral Home in Hiawassee.
