The Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) obtained new arrest warrants for Alexander Wade Hardaway of Alto on Tuesday, March 19. The new charges are:

  • Improper sexual contact in the second degree when he, in his employment as a detention officer for the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, knowingly engaged in sexual contact with a female inmate.
  • Violation of oath by a public officer.

Hardaway was released on bond on Friday, March 22 from the Habersham County Detention Center.

According to the press release, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office has cooperated fully with GBI investigators to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry into the matter and remains dedicated to its mission of serving and protecting the public with integrity and professionalism.

Sheriff Joey Terrell stated, “Any breach of trust or misconduct by my personnel will not be tolerated.”

Hardaway was originally accused of “interacting with inmates in an inappropriate manner,” last September. He was fired from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office on September 29, 2023.

During the GBI’s initial investigation into the allegations, Hardaway made false statements to the GBI. He was arrested on October 2, 2023. He was released on a $3,400 bond at that time.
