The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has released new details about the recent arrest of a former Habersham County jailer.

GBI agents arrested Alexander Wade Hardaway, 30, of Alto, on October 2. The agency says preliminary information indicates that Hardaway was “interacting with inmates in an inappropriate manner.”

“During the investigation, Hardaway made false statements to the GBI, resulting in his arrest,” the GBI says.

On September 28, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to investigate after receiving a complaint from an inmate. The next day, the sheriff’s office fired Hardaway for policy violations.

“Any breach of trust or misconduct by my personnel will not be tolerated,” Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell said.

The GBI charged Hardaway with making false statements and writings and booked him at the same jail where he once worked.

Hardaway was released on a $3,400 bond.

County spokesperson Rob Moore says the sheriff’s office is cooperating fully with GBI investigators to ensure a “thorough and impartial inquiry into the matter.”
