Former Habersham County Commissioner Dewey Tench Dies

Funeral services are scheduled Tuesday for former Habersham County Commissioner Dewey Tench. Tench passed away Saturday.

A native of Cornelia, Tench served in the US Army during WWII and continued his life of public service at home through politics and law enforcement. He served as a Habersham County Commissioner for 16 years and was a founding member of the Habersham County Sheriff’s Posse. Dewey Tench retired from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Reserve in 2012.

A retired tire store owner-operator, Tench was well known throughout the local community. He was recognized for his years of public service with the naming of the Dewey H. Tench Market Building/Pavilion at the Habersham County Fairgrounds.

Tench was married to the late Nellie Ivie Tench. He’s survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law, sisters, brothers, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Monday, November 2, 2015 at Whitfield Funeral Home in Demorest.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 3, 2015 in Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel in Demorest with Rev. Chris York officiating. Interment will follow in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Rabun County DAV Post #15, the Grant-Reeves V.F.W. Post 7720, and the American Legion Post # 84.
