Heavy rain causes flooding in Northeast Georgia

A storm system that blew in from the Gulf caused widespread flooding in Habersham County and surrounding areas.

Between 3 and 6 inches of rain fell on the region in the past 24 hours causing creeks and rivers to overflow. Water releases from Lake Burton and Lake Rabun will lead to additional rises downstream on the lower Tallulah River in southern Rabun County. The Chattahoochee River west of Cornelia is above flood stage. In Clarkesville, the Soque River flooded Pitts Park.

The flooding at Pitts Park is so severe it attracted a steady stream of onlookers throughout the day Friday. People stood in the road and bridge overlooking the park to get a better look. No one was allowed inside. The main gate was closed and Clarkesville Police posted a unit outside the park to keep people at a safe distance.

Flooding temporarily closed some roads in the region. Walking trails along the Tallulah River were closed due to the high rushing water.
