Fleeing driver still at large after police chase ends in wreck north of Helen

An as yet unidentified driver who fled from a Lumpkin County traffic stop Sunday evening remains at large.

The fleeing driver left Lumpkin County and traveled into White County as the officer continued the pursuit, officials say. The driver wrecked his vehicle north of Helen.

The incident began around 6:30 p.m. on Easter Sunday, April 9.

The Georgia State Patrol says the suspect was driving a Dodge Charger, traveling north on GA 75 in White County. During the pursuit, the driver crossed the centerline and struck a Ford F-250 truck pulling a camper.

The accident happened in the area of Tray Mountain Road. The incident shut down the roadway for about three hours.

After impact with the truck, the driver of the Dodge Charger fled on foot.

According to the state patrol, there were no injuries as a result of the crash, and the fleeing driver was not apprehended.

The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office is following-up on identifying the driver.

No details have been released by Lumpkin County authorities about how the chase began.
