(Cleveland)- White County resident and current Board of Education member Roger Fitzpatrick has announced he will challenge 9th District Congressman Doug Collins in this year’s congressional race. Fitzpatrick ran as a Republican in 2012 coming in third behind Martha Zoller and Collins.
Fitzpatrick said he made his decision over the weekend, “ I had several people come up to me in the recent past to consider running and so over the weekend after much prayer and deliberation and discussion with those that I trust I’ve come to the decision now is the time to run,” said Fitzpatrick.
Congressman Collins voting record was one of the key factors Fitzpatrick said he decided to run again. He said, “ I gave Mr. Collins the benefit of the doubt, and but here recently and especially with the omnibus bill he just voted for to fund the federal government for fiscal year budget for 2016. When I found out what was in that bill it really upset me, that he would choose to vote for a bill like that.”
Fitzpatrick currently serves as president of the Lanier Tea Party Patriots and is a White County Board of Education member, the latter position he will have to relinquish when he officially qualifies for the congressional race.
The General Primary election will be held May 24th.
