Fireworks light up night sky over Lake Burton

The Fourth of July weekend got off to a rousing start in Rabun County’s lake community. A large crowd turned out by boat and on land Saturday to watch the latest extravaganza put on by Lake Burton Fireworks.

The fireworks display — shot annually from Billy Goat Island in the middle of the Northeast Georgia lake — is fully community funded. Organizers say this year they’ve raised over $97,000 of their $100,000 goal. Much of that pyrotechnic power was on display July 3.

While the fireworks are best viewed from boats, they can be seen from boathouses around the lake and LaPrade’s Marina on GA 197 North.

Lake Burton’s annual fireworks show grew from a homeowner’s birthday celebration over 45 years ago into the spectacle it is today.

There will be another fireworks display later this year. A portion of the money raised will be used to fund a smaller show Labor Day weekend for the Lake Burton Community Association’s summer sendoff.
