Firefighters save puppy from well

A puppy that got stuck in a well is back safe and sound with its owners today, thanks to some local firefighters.

Habersham County 911 dispatched units to a house in Clarkesville around 10 p.m. Thursday after receiving a call that a man and puppy were inside a well under the house. When units arrived they found the man was not inside the well, but the puppy he was trying to rescue was.

The male puppy apparently wandered in through a hole on the side of the well and fell approximately 25 feet.

Habersham County Emergency Services asked Demorest Fire for help rescuing the puppy, according to HCES director Chad Black. Firefighters cut a hole through the floor in a closet above the well top and used rope to retrieve the puppy.

He was not injured.

Black says emergency responders will do what they can to assist the public in these types of situations when they’re not assigned to other emergency calls. He adds, “It’s nice to have calls such as this with a great outcome.”

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the floor above the top of the well to rescue the puppy. (HCES)
