Firefighters responding to kitchen fire rescue beloved pet

HCES Firefighter/EMT Brad Davidson pets 'Buddy' after rescuing him from a burning home Thursday near Clarkesville.

It was a close call this afternoon for a Habersham County woman and her dog after fire broke out inside a home on Alec Mountain Road.

The woman called 911 at 3:12 p.m. Thursday to report that her kitchen cabinets were on fire and the house was full of smoke. She told dispatchers she made it out of the house but her dog was still inside.

Habersham County and Lee Arrendale firefighters arrived at the scene at 3077 Alec Mountain Road to find smoke showing from the eaves of the approximately 1800 square foot, wood frame, single-story structure.

“Crews made an aggressive interior attack and were able to stop the fire in the kitchen and area of origin,” says Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black. HCES firefighters Brad Davidson and Capt. Michael Alexander searched the house and found her dog, Buddy, in the rear bedroom. Black says the dog was “scared but appeared to be okay.” They safely reunited the dog with his owner.

The fire damage was contained to the kitchen, but there was smoke damage throughout the house. Buddy and his owner will be staying with family until the house is repaired.

Officials say it appears the fire started as a result of cooking that was possibly left unattended.
