The victim of Monday afternoon’s tree-cutting incident north of Hollywood has died.

Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire says 74-year-old Leonard Highsmith of Rabun County died late Tuesday afternoon, February 7, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Highsmith’s death has been ruled accidental, resulting from complications of a serious leg injury suffered while cutting a tree.

“Our thoughts and prayers extend to the family through this difficult time,” McEntire says.

Habersham County firefighters rescued Highsmith from the tree after he was injured while cutting limbs on a vacant lot at 176 Montego Bay. He was unconscious, stuck in the tree about 20 feet off the ground.

Firefighters used a ladder truck to reach him and carry him to the ground. Habersham EMS, with support from AirLife paramedics, transported him by ambulance to the hospital, where he later died.
