Firefighters used GPS to locate and rescue two lost hikers in the mountains of White County Sunday evening. Rescuers found the hikers around 7 p.m. several miles from where they had set out earlier in the day.

Officials say on September 25 the pair began hiking on Yonah Mountain outside of Cleveland and lost their sense of direction.

“Through our 911 system, we were able to locate them on Pink Mountain off of Mountainside Drive,” says White County Public Safety Public Information Officer Bryce Barrett.

A team of White County firefighters was able to pinpoint the lost hikers using GPS coordinates and quickly located the individuals. Firefighters escorted the individuals off the mountain and returned them safely to their vehicle within two hours.

No injuries were reported.
