Firefighters rescue injured hiker on Appalachian Trail

Firefighters in White County spent several hours today rescuing a hiker who was injured in a fall on the Appalachian Trail.

White County firefighters with automatic aid from the City of Helen Fire Department responded to the call, according to White County Public Safety Director David Murphy. He says the hiker injured her ankle.

First responders hiked in, stabilized the patient and placed her in a Stokes basket for removal. They then hiked the patient out to the command post. From there she was transported by EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Murphy says the entire incident took about three hours.
