Firefighters injured in White County fire

Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that heavily damaged a garage and injured two firefighters in White County over the weekend.

The fire broke out around 10:30 p.m. on January 19 inside a three bay garage in the 400 block of Possum Trot Road.

Firefighters from Stations 2, 4, 5, City of Cleveland Fire and Lee Arrendale were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they saw heavy smoke coming out of the building, according to Ana Newberry of White County Fire Services.

“No one was in the building at the time but the owners, who lived across the street, stated they heard what appeared to be an explosion,” says Newberry. “When they went outside, they could see the smoke coming from the rear of the building and called 911.”

The 1800 square foot garage was used for storage. It sustained heavy smoke and heat damage.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. They were treated on the scene by White County EMS. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately two and a half hours.

Fire/arson investigators are handling the investigation.
