Fire destroyed a barn at the popular local tourist spot Sunburst Stables Monday night. A passerby saw the barn burning and called 911.

At 8:13 p.m. on March 16, Habersham County 911 dispatched firefighters to the scene at Highway 255 at Sunburst Lane in Batesville. When firefighters arrived they found the 1,000-1,200 square foot structure nearly fully involved in fire.

Habersham County Emergency Services responded along with mutual aid from Rabun and White counties. The Lee Arrendale Fire Brigade from Alto also assisted.

Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the flames and continued putting out hot spots for several hours. The barn was a total loss. Authorities say there were no horses in the barn but there were some birds and ducks that died in the fire.

Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black says they still don’t know what caused the blaze.

Sunburst Stables is a well-known tourist destination that’s been operating in northern Habersham County for over 30 years. It’s known for its outdoor adventures including horseback riding, trail rides, ziplining, and ATV tours.
