An early morning fire destroyed a White County landmark.

The old Silver Spur Skating Rink went up in flames around 2 a.m. Friday. White County Fire units with Automatic Aid from the City of Cleveland and Lee Arrendale fire departments responded to the scene at 33 Roller Rink Road.

According to reports, the structure was over 80 percent involved when White County E911 dispatchers were called. By the time the first units arrived, the 4,000 square foot structure was nearly one-hundred percent involved.

The structure, once a local recreation and gathering spot, was being used to store commercial equipment. It also served as a residence to ten family members. The family safely evacuated the building and no one was injured, according to Ana Newberry with White County Fire Services. She says the Red Cross was called to assist the displaced family.

The structure and eight vehicles were damaged and/or destroyed. Five vehicles burned inside the building, three others were outside.

Firefighters spent six hours on the scene extinguishing the flames and putting out hot spots.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
