Fire destroys chicken house; loss at over a half-million dollars

A devastating fire overnight at a local farm destroyed a chicken house, causing more than a half-million dollars in damage. Firefighters and medics were dispatched to the scene at 393 Blue Creek Farm just after midnight when a 911 caller reported the blaze.

Habersham County Fire Stations 13, 16, 17, Medic 21, Battalion 1 and Captain 1 responded along with firefighters from Lee Arrendale State Prison.

When they arrived, about three-fourths of the structure was already engulfed in flames, says Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black.

He says there weren’t any fire hydrants in the immediate area so they requested an additional tanker truck from White County.

Crews fought to contain the fire. They also had to spray down and cool a nearby large LP gas tank to keep it from exploding.

Black says at this point it’s undetermined as to what caused the fire. He points out there were storms in the area around the time it broke out.

The structure was a total loss. The damage is estimated at $600,000.
