Cause of Demorest residential fire under investigation

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is working to determine the cause of an overnight fire that gutted a home in Demorest.

The fire broke out at a residence at 1443 East Mize Road. Habersham County 911 received multiple calls about the fire and dispatched units to the scene around 11:06 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14.

Firefighters from Habersham County, Demorest, and Lee Arrendale responded. They arrived on the scene to find heavy fire coming from the 5,000 square-foot structure, says Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black.

A bystander advised firefighters they were unaware if anyone was home. Firefighters conducted a primary search of the residence and did not find anyone inside.

It took firefighters nearly an hour to get the flames under control, moving from an offensive to defensive attack due to the number of firefighters on the scene, says Black. Firefighters cleared the scene around 4:24 a.m. Friday.

Local officials asked the State Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate. The fire marshal spoke with the owner who arrived prior to the start of the investigation. Officials have not yet determined the cause. No one was injured in the blaze.
