“University of North Georgia’s Annual Exhibition of Georgia Art Educators and Their Students” presented local student art work at the Price Memorial Hall Galleries at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega January 29th- March 12th.
This year, six art pieces were selected for the display by Habersham Central High School art teachers Jill Gallagher and Dr. Amber Kerr. Featured artists included Kerr and HCHS students Hannah Thomas, Caitlyn Hulsey, Kyra Shalikashvili, Alexandra Fuetterer and Megan Hutchinson.
UNG Exhibition
A reception was held March 11 during the final hours of the exhibit. Awards were handed out for Best in Show and Honorable Mention. HCHS didn’t bring home any prizes but students left with the distinction of having had their artwork publicly displayed.
“I think that experiences like this are important for our students. It allows them exposure to colleges they may be interested in and affords them the opportunity to put their artwork out in the community which is both positive for our students and our program at HCHS,” says Kerr. “Sometimes, students are able to get scholarship offers or cash awards from colleges once they have seen the quality of our students’ work.”
Habersham Central Fine Arts Night
Some of the art work that was presented at the University of North Georgia will be on display at Habersham Central High School on Fine Arts Night, March 30 (6-9pm). Fine Arts Night will give members of the community a chance to enjoy band performances, choral performances, art demonstrations, unveiling of new artwork along with a preview of the spring musical, Footloose!
Kerr says events that celebrate the fine arts, such as the art display and Fine Arts Night, are a valuable part of the high school experience. “I think the arts are an important part of our school at HCHS and play a vital role in students feeling invested in the school culture here. It is through the arts that students are afforded the opportunity to express themselves in ways they might otherwise not get to in the traditional academic classroom setting. They also get challenged in new and invigorating ways that help the student grow intellectually and personally as an individual.” Kerr adds, “For some of our kids, the arts is what keeps them in school and gives them a sense of belonging and purpose as they pursue their futures, helping them to accomplish their goals and finish high school.”
