Fight over food ends in bus stop shooting, Athens police say

A dispute over food led to a shooting that put one person in the hospital and another in jail, an Athens-Clarke County police press release says.

Officers arrested 25-year-old Douglas Barnett of Athens in connection to the shooting. It happened around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, at a bus stop in the 1000 block of Lakeside Drive.

According to police, an argument over food at a nearby apartment escalated into a physical altercation at the apartment complex bus stop.

“During the altercation, a firearm was brandished, and the victim received a gunshot to the upper thigh,” says Lt. Jody Thompson, public information officer for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

Thompson says when officials arrived at the scene, they rendered life-saving aid and applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital. They are expected to recover, Thompson says.

Police charged Barnett with aggravated assault.
