Interstate 85 has reopened after a fatal fiery crash that shut down all northbound lanes near Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Gwinnett County Saturday morning.
The fire erupted when a tractor-trailer overturned. The wreck killed the truck driver and a person in a car involved in the crash.
Fuel from the truck flowed underneath the southbound lanes of I-85, causing multiple explosions in the sewer system. Smoke and flames billowed from manhole covers in the area, WSB-TV reports.
Drivers were evacuated from their cars and people were evacuated from nearby businesses. The tanker fire also sparked a brush fire that caused power outages in the area.
Georgia Department of Transportation emergency crews repaved an approximately 100 x 70-foot section of the highway that was damaged by the fire.
