First Baptist Church of Cornelia exists to “Love the World as God Loves Us.” All year, the children of the church have been learning about the importance of missions.
The children decided to put missions into action by having a Bike-A-Thon for Missions on Sunday, May 23rd. They raised money to build a playground for the children at Calvary Chapel and the Re-Nutrition Center next door to the chapel outside of Matagalpa, Nicaragua.
For the past 15 years, First Baptist Church of Cornelia has partnered with First Baptist Church of Matagalpa. Mission teams, led by Rhett and Tammy Weaver, have visited Nicaragua many times, providing medical care and spiritual nourishment for the people there.
The children’s committee of FBC Cornelia contacted Tammy to find out if there was a specific need among the children in Nicaragua that the children of FBC Cornelia could help with. The idea of building the playground was born.
The children had only one week to raise money from their family, friends, and FBC Cornelia church members. Some also worked by doing extra chores to earn money for the mission project! At the Bike-A-Thon, the children turned in the money they raised and then rode one lap for every $5 raised.
Any child who raised $100 or more was able to “pie” a member of the children’s committee. Because the children exceeded their total goal of $1500, several of them were able to “pie” their new Interim Children’s Minister, Jameson Deering.
At the conclusion of the Bike-A-Thon, the children had raised over $4000. The children would like to express their appreciation to everyone who donated.
