Firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire early this morning north of Clarkesville.

Around 1:47 a.m., Habersham County 911 received a call from a homeowner reporting that their residence at 314 Alley’s Chapel Road was on fire. Multiple units from Habersham County Emergency Services (HCES) and Lee Arrendale Fire Departments responded to the call. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and fire coming from the entire length of the floor of an approximately 1500-1800 square foot modular home.

“Personnel were able to make a quick attack on the fire and keep the fire mostly contained to the underside of the home,” says HCES Director Chad Black. The fire extended into the wall, forcing firefighters to cut a hole in the wall to access and completely extinguish the flames.

Once it was safe, the family was allowed back inside their residence with fire department personnel to retrieve personal belongings. They were offered but declined assistance from the Red Cross because they have other family members in the area they could stay with, says Black.

Firefighters remained on the scene for just over two hours. The cause of the fire remains undetermined but a preliminary investigation indicates it may have been caused by an electrical issue.
